Phoenix West

The Phoenix-West site is the symbol of Dortmund’s once prosperous metallurgical industry. The disused blast furnace attests to the region’s former specialisation as a producer of pig iron. Several metres away, the former gasometer of the former blast furnace site shapes the skyline of the south of Dortmund. The giant 76.5-metre-high cylindrical reservoir with its 120,000 cubic metre capacity is still unused.

This district, which is undergoing complete transformation, now houses modern traditional breweries, avant-garde art galleries, and peaceful parks that have brought the district back to life. The blast furnaces, as well as the Hoesch gasometer, attest to this glorious epoch in Dortmund’s industrial history.

The Phoenixhalle, renamed the ‘Phoenix des Lumières’, is an industrial building that has been renovated and transformed into a venue for immersive digital exhibitions.
